CHOICE is calling for a total ban on junk food advertising on television between 6am and 9pm to reduce rising rates of obesity among children. The consumer advocacy body's proposed ban - echoed by the Cancer Council, Obesity Policy Coalition and the Parents Jury campaign - would prohibit all radio and TV ads for foods high in fat, sugar and salt between 6am and 9pm. It would also like a ban on the use of celebrities, cartoon characters and free gifts which induce anyone under the age of 16 to eat certain foods.
